Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

The novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is set in Mississippi during the early 1930s. The main character is a young African-American girl named Cassie Logan. Throughout the story, Cassie and her family encounter racist attitudes from the people that live around them. In one instance, Cassie and her brothers are purposely covered in dirt as the bus that the white children are able to ride, passes them on the road. The kids later dig a hole in the road, putting the bus out of commission for awhile. That is just one example of the unfairness that the Logan family members must face. The novel focuses on how the characters, especially Cassie, cope with the injustices and prejudices all around them.
