Materials/Equipment Needed: computers, newspapers, magazines, cd roms pertaining to a variety of careers

Description of Lesson (includes context):Students will research careers, produce a six framed slide show depicting the information they have researched, and present this slideshow to classmates. This slideshow will be a compilation of primary and secondary sources, as well as student's concepts of how this career will shape his/her future.

LESSON OUTLINE

1. What is the objective of this lesson?
2. Students will be able to research a specific career and present this information using
   both concrete and abstract ideas.
3. Students will learn how to use both primary and secondary sources.
4. Students will evaluate pertinent resources and paraphrase the information considering
   organization of ideas (subject), graphics (form), and audience.

DIRECTIONS

3. What exactly will the students and teacher do during the lesson?

Directions to students for proceeding with the lesson:

1. Students will identify a career he or she is interested in.
2. Students will make an appointment to interview someone who works in the specified
   career. This interview will be conducted in person on Out to WorkDay or by
   telephone.
3. Students will brainstorm a list of pertinent questions to ask.
4. Students will be advised on how to take notes and how to conduct himself/herself
   during the interview.
5. After the interviews, students will be given directions on additional research that will be
   completed regarding this career.
6. Students will go to the library and research specific sites that have been bookmarked
   and other resource materials.
7. Students will determine which information will be valuable, take notes and write down
   the address of cites and resources that were used.
8. Students will brainstorm how they will design their slideshow in terms of graphics and
   paragraphs. They will create a story board.
9. Students will be taken to the computer lab to design their slideshow.
10. Students will complete slideshows and present to the class. Students should be
    prepared to answer questions from the audience.

Directions to teacher/administrator using the lesson?

1. Review the lesson we have designed and make modifications as needed.
2. Decide on what specific questions your students need to ask in the interview and help to
   facilitate these during class brainstorming activities.
3. Bookmark specific cites that students may use to find career information. Suggestions
   are the following:Netsearch -Career Planning
   CDROM -Virginia View and Bridges
   magazines, Occupational Outlook Handbook
4. Review the directions on how to create a slideshow.
5. Relax and let them do the work!! :-)

Students may work in groups and divide up responsibilities.

In designing a rubric, more value could be placed on graphics for LD and ESL students.
