Bohr Models

Overview

Students will be assigned a research project on an element of their choice. Included in the research will be a cover sheet designed in the computer lab, a written report, a computerized Bohr Model using ClarisWorks Drawing Application and a bibliography. Students will be given two days in the library and two days in the computer lab.
The cover sheet will include the following information on the element: name, symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, number of protons, neutrons, and electrons, number of electrons in each orbit, family, period, metal or nonmetal, phase of matter it naturally occurs in, students name, class period, and date. The cover sheet will be completed in the computer lab and the student will have creative freedom to format information.
The written report will include the history of the element, the physical and chemical properties of the element and the uses of the element. The Bohr Model will be included in the written report and will require the title to be centered at the top of the page, naming the element and the elements symbol. The students name, class period, and date will be in the upper right hand corner. The model of the element will cover most of the page. A key will be used at the bottom of the page to indicate the color of each subatomic particle and the number of each subatomic particle.
The bibliography will cite from three sources. At least one of the sources will be an electronic source.

Concepts

The student will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of atomic structure and the use of the periodic table.
  • Utilize electronic research skills.
  • Use ClarisWorks Drawing Application to illustrate a Bohr Model.

Indicators

The student will:

  • Use a CD-Rom and the Internet to access information.
  • Use the periodic table.
  • Use ClarisWorks Drawing Application to design a Bohr Model of an element.

Precomputer

  • The student will:
  • Learn atomic structure through labs, lecture and textbook reading.
  • Draw a rough draft of the cover sheet and the Bohr Model before entering the computer lab.
  • The students will receive computer notes and directions on how to use the drawing application.
  • The student will be shown models as examples.

On the computer

  • See file named computer notes.

?

Postcomputer

  • Students will display and view Bohr Models.
  • Students will assemble a research project to include cover sheet, written report, Bohr Model and bibliography.
